In 2019, there are more and more wildfire throughout the whole country of USA, especially the California. Exposure to smoke can have dangerous effects on our health. Therefore, the Central California Asthma Collaborative (CCAC), urges all residents to avoid rigorous outdoor activity. One more thing, we need to know the answer for this question: How can you protect yourself from wildfire smoke?
The elderly, children and individuals with respiratory conditions are advised to filter air, limit outside activities or otherwise temporarily leave the impacted area. Children are over sensitive to smoke pollution, as their airways are still developing.
Now what should we do to protect ourselves from wildfire smoke?
Avoid outdoor exposure
You need to check daily radio for the air pollution status in your area. When the level is high, avoid all outdoor exposure. Instead, you can walk in a giant shopping mall or use the gym to exercise. Limit the amount of time you spend outdoors if the air quality is unhealthy.
Also, you should keep notification about the near high-traffic areas. Even when air quality forecasts are green, the vehicles on busy highways can create high pollution levels up to one-third mile away.
Stop burning woods or charcoal
Burning firewood and trash are among the major sources of particle pollution (soot) in many parts of the country. If you do it indoors, you won’t escape the inevitable pollution. Moreover, you can limit burning candles, gas stoves and vacuuming because they can increase indoor pollution.
If you still need to do it, remember to have at least the respiratory mask N95 or N100 to filter out fine particles. Avoid a one‐strap paper dust mask or a surgical mask that hooks around your ears as they don’t protect against fine particles.
Keep indoor air clean
So now, you should keep your indoor air clean.
First, you need to keep or increase the ventilation at home. It will help reduce the moisture level, and purify the air. Make it a point to ventilate your kitchen since cooking can be a major source of indoor air pollution, especially if you have a gas stove.
Also, after you take a shower, be sure to vent out all the steam and extra moisture in the air which can cause mold and mildew growth by turning the fan on.
Carpets are a toxic sponge. Clean them often. Especially the part of the carpeting near the entry of the house. According to an EPA study, if you use a doormat and take shoes off at the door – common toxins are reduced by about 60%.
Eliminate excessive moisture, dust build-up and the use of chemical products like paint, detergents, and synthetic fibers. Side note: Say no to dry dusting! Use a damp cloth to clean up and to avoid breathing in all the dust particles which are lifted into the air while you clean.
